At Salt+Earth we take you back to the way of life that I grew up with as a kiwi farmer’s son, hunting for food for the table to satisfy the hearty appetite of our family.
Young and old, inexperienced or experienced, I want to share our way of life with you, invite you to immerse yourself in our hills and mountains, live off the land, only taking what you need to eat. If you’ve never hunted before, we will teach you how to fire a rifle accurately and to hunt humanely, choosing the correct animal by sex, age, and condition. You will hunt on a 100,000 acre private Kiwi owned sheep station, stalking deer skilfully through the rolling hills and mountains in the twilight or the sun rise – the golden hour when the deer move out of the bush to forage. You’ll also learn how to ‘pack it out’ - carrying it from the hill to bring it home. If you want to, roll your sleeves up and learn how to hang and skin your deer, butcher it for the table, help cook it and savour the taste of your day’s hunt, fresh Fiordland venison (deer meat) and some fine Central Otago Pinot Noir.
We prefer to hunt for fallow deer as they provide the finest venison to eat. We can hunt for fallow all year round for food. Trophy hunts are possible on request during the hunting season from mid February to mid May.
Binoculars, rifle, lunch and drinks provided. Hiking boots and other outdoor clothing can be hired if you do not have your own.
